This litigation arises from the January 8, 2020, downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 (“Flight PS752”) shortly after takeoff from Tehran, Iran, traveling to Canada with many Canadian citizens on board. The plane was struck by two missiles fired by members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, crashed in a village southwest of Tehran, Iran, and exploded, killing everyone on board. After initially denying responsibility, Iran admitted it had shot down the plane.
On January 20, 2020, a class action was commenced in Canada, which Galactic agreed to fund. The named Defendants are the Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic Revolutionary Guards (collectively, the “Iran Defendants”), and Ukraine International Air Lines (which is insured through reinsurance agreements by numerous insurance companies).
The case came to trial in November 2023. The trial on liability was completed with decision imminent. Galactic is confident that liability has been established.
A damage trial will follow.
